The Palace of Herrenchiemsee

Herrenchiemsee (Men's Island)

The castle on the Men’s Island is one of the biggest tourist attractions in upper Bavaria. In 1873 Ludwig II acquired the island and erected a pompous castle modelled after Versailles. He revered the French Sun-King and created with this castle, a monument to absolute monarchy. It serves less as living quarters, and more as a symbolic spreading of his fame. After his death in 1885 the building was left unfinished. The island is called "Men's Island" because the first building on the island had been a men's cloister, the "Augustiner Chorherrenstift", which now is a museum.

All facilities are open daily, except Dec. 24., 25., and 31., New Years Day, Shrove Tuesday). Opening hours:

Royal Palace with staterooms: Apr. 1 - Oct. 3 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., Oct. 4 - Oct. 31 9:40 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Nov. 1 - March 31 9:40 a.m.-4:00 p.m. The castle can only be visited as part of a tour.

King Ludwig II Museum: Apr. 1 - Oct. 3 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., Oct. 4 - Oct. 31 10:00 a.m.-5:45 p.m., Nov. 1 - March 31 10:00 a.m.-4:45 p.m.

Time allotment: By ship from Prien-Stock/Herreninsel or Gstadt Herreninsel approx. 20 min. Walk from landing place – Palace approx. 20 min. Guided tour of Royal Palace approx. 30-35 min. Visit of King Ludwig II Museum min. approx. 30-45 min. Museum in the former Herrenchiemsee monastery (Old Palace) min. approx. 30-45 min.
Horse-drawn coach rides from the landing place to the Palace and return (mid-April through the end of Oct.): one-way ticket adult € 3,– per person, one-way ticket children 4 to 15 years € 2,–.
