The Chiemsee Schifffahrt

That’s what tourist from all parts of the world love to do - cross the great Chiemsee on a paddle wheel steamer and, after visiting the palace, enjoy a walk around the island Frauenchiemsee, which is still home to Benedictan nuns and always has been a fishermen’s island. Furthermore, the idyllic island has been home to many artists, who drew the power necessary for their work from the silence and beauty of the "Fraueninsel". The gate-house, established in the 8th century, is the oldest of its kind in Southern Bavaria. Today, it opens its doors for arts exhibitions all year round. The most famous performance on the picturesque island is the immensly popular “Christkindlmarkt” (christmas market) which takes place on the first and second weekends in December.

Chiemsee-Schifffahrt and Chiemseebahn

You reach both islands with boats from Prien and Gstadt (all year) as well as from Bernau, Chieming, Seebruck, Übersee (May-October).

The Chiemseebahn is the oldest still running steam-train in the world. Built between 1887 and 1888, it’s a nostalgic way to get from the central train station to the ferry harbour.
